Abdulkader Abdulrahmn Al-Gilani, Ph.D. is a graduate of King Abdulaziz University, Department of Landscape Architecture. During his undergraduate study, he won first prize in an international UN-organized competition as a member of a group of five. Later he earned his Masters of Landscape Architecture from the University of Pennsylvania, with concentration on innovative design methods, and GIS application in landscape architecture. Following his masters, he earned his Ph.D. from the University of Colorado. He worked at the University of Colorado at Boulder as a part time instructor. His PhD’s dissertation was entitled “Understanding the Image of the Islamic Urban Landscape”. His research focused his passion for the preservation of cultures. In quest for this passion, he further earned a Graduate Certificate in Historic Preservation from the University of Colorado.
Since 2005, he has been a staff member in the Department of Landscape Architecture in King Abdulaziz University and has supervised the Office of Educational affairs at the College of Environmental Design the Department from 2006-2009. He was the Chair of the Department of Landscape Architecture & Vice Dean of The Faculy of Environmental Design at King Abdulaziz University. Currently he is the Vice Dean for Foundation Year at the Deanship of Admission & Registration.
Although his interest spans across the spectrum of the field of landscape architecture, his passion is the preservation of culture and public involvement in design processes. Dr. Al-Gilani’s main research topics now are: Redevelopments in the Muslim World, the public cognitive perception of their public environment and public accessibility. Dr. Al-Gilani, for the past two years, has been in charge of Graduate level Studios (LA 598 & LA 599), along with two 3rd and 4th year courses. Namely: LA 354 (Planting Technology), LA 411(Landscape Management) and LA 331 (Landscape of Man) in the Department of Landscape Architecture.
Dr. Al-Gilani is a strong believer in volunteer work and has executed several design-to-build jobs in the USA and hope to be able to do the same in his home country soon.
